Wow.
When you link that the 24-hour news cycle beginning in the 80s, the sudden skyrocketing towards puritanism (or, at least, the public appearance and enforcement of) in the years following — a lot of recent history starts falling into place.
Scary stories make for fearful viewers and fearful viewers can’t think outside themselves — much less experience empathy.
And empathy being the basis on which all positive human interaction has ever been based… well. You can see how we now find ourselves in a bit of a pickle.

The entire piece is worth the read; Caren Spruch is the only kind of person who alters the state of our current society — the person with one singular goal, devoting their entire agency toward effecting the change they want to see.
The shepherd’s boy says, “There’s this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it, and an hour to go around it. Every hundred years, a little bird comes. It sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.” You must think that’s a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that’s a hell of a bird.
